Smoked Tri Tip Roast is a delicious cut of beef that becomes tender, smoky, and full of rich flavor when slow-cooked in a smoker. It’s perfect for weekend barbecues, holiday meals, or anytime you want a restaurant-style dinner at home. Slice it thin and enjoy it with your favorite sides or in sandwiches!

Ingredients

  • 1 tri tip roast (2–3 pounds)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • Wood chips (hickory, oak, or cherry)

Directions

  • Pat the tri tip dry with paper towels.
  • In a small bowl, mix the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Rub the roast with olive oil, then coat it with the spice mix.
  • Preheat your smoker to 225°F (107°C) and add wood chips.
  • Place the tri tip in the smoker and cook for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until internal temp reaches 135°F (57°C) for medium-rare.
  • Remove the roast and let it rest for 10–15 minutes.
  • Slice thinly against the grain and serve warm.

Notes

  • For more flavor, marinate the tri tip overnight before smoking.
    Use a meat thermometer for best results.
    Great served with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, or in sliders.
    Leftovers make amazing sandwiches or tacos!
